General information about fishing
Fishing in Porsanger, Karasjok, Kautokeino, Tana and Nesseby
OBS! In the traditional Sami way of thinking you should never take more from the nature than you need for your own survival. You should always leave the place as you found it. This way we always keep the species living and our areas clean. Keep this in mind while fishing, thanks in advance.
On this site we have gathered general information for you while fishing, where to get the fishing licenses, how to pay the fishing fee, where to disinfect your gear and the rules for fishing.
Fishing on the ice
Ice fishing is the all time favorite activity in late winter/spring. There are no fees or fishing licenses required for this type of fishing. We recommend going with a local if you want to go ice fishing, they have the gear and the knowledge.
FISHING FEE AND FISHING LICENSE
In order to be able to fish for salmon, sea trout and char in the rivers or on the sea with fixed gear, you must pay the state fishing fee. Children and young people under the age of 18 do not have to pay fishing fees. The fishing fee is only needed if you are going to fish for salmon, sea trout or char in rivers or with fixed gear in the sea. You do not need to pay the state fishing tax when you fish inland fish. You do not need to pay a fishing fee or buy a fishing license to fish on the lake with a normal fishing rod/fishing equipment.

A fishing license is not required for people who live within the borders of the former Finnmark county when it comes to inland fishing. But in order to fish for salmon, sea trout or sea trout in rivers or on the sea, people living in former Finnmark must also buy a fishing license for the river in question.
All persons residing outside Finnmark must have a fishing license to be able to fish both inland and in rivers, with the exception of children under 16 years of age. Visitors between the ages of 16 and 20 are encouraged to register for a free youth card.

DISINFECTION
To avoid spreading infection between rivers or to other parts of the same river, fishing equipment, boats or other possible infectious objects must be disinfected, frozen or dried. This is to prevent infection by the salmon parasite Gyrodactylus Salaris. The salmon parasite, also called «gyro», is a small parasite of less than 1 mm and currently poses a threat to Norwegian wild salmon populations, and has currently been detected in 48 Norwegian waterways. To avoid the spread or infection of gyro, you should remember the following:
- Do not move or release fish into the wild without permission from the County Governor
- Do not wash or gut fish in places other than where you caught it
- Do not move equipment from one river to another without drying or disinfecting it
- Do not discharge water into a river other than where it was collected.
